My Story

This October I will be doing the Great South Run, and running 10 miles to support my chosen charity - Vasculitis UK.

Here is why...

8 years ago our lives changed overnight when my Mum suddenly became ill, I remember when it first started she went from being perfectly healthy to struggling for breath simply trying to climb the stairs.

Things worsened and she was admitted to hospital, where they discovered and diagnosed her with Vasculitis (an autoimmune disease where the body’s immune system attacks blood vessels instead of defending them against infection). Explained here.

For Mum this has predominantly affected her lungs and respiratory system, however, the impact of steroids on her body for this length of time has caused other complications including Osteoporosis.

As a result, she stepped back from a lifelong career she adored and has been on a rollercoaster with her health since. It has affected all aspects of her and our lives.

Despite the hardship, Mum remains positive. She always encourages us to 'look after ourselves' and it's my hope that this will raise awareness for a disease without a cure that can be minimised with early diagnosis and treatment.

Your donations towards this cause are hugely meaningful.

Vasculitis UK provides support, advice, and information to those suffering from vasculitis and their families. VUK also sponsors research into the causes and treatment of vasculitis and works to raise general awareness of ALL types of vasculitis. VUK is run by volunteers who all have vasculitis.
